Tiger Oscar

The Tiger Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is one of the most popular fish of the aquarium hobbyist due to it’s beautiful markings, extroverted personality, and tendency to interact with it’s keeper. This fish grows to an impressive size (10 to 14 inches) rather quickly, so is best kept in a larger aquarium from the start.

They are fast swimmers and like to frequent the middle section of the tank and, although not as aggressive as other cichlids it’s size, it will eat any fish that can fit in it’s mouth and so does best as an “only” fish, or with tank mates it has grown up with from a juvenile age, rather than introduced to as an adult. 

Males and females of the species are identical in shape and color. Oscars have brown, or black bodies, with orange or red marks, or marbling. As juveniles their color markings are dull, but brighten with age.
