Bala Sharks (Balantiocheilos melanopterus) are a schooling fish and, despite their name, are not actual sharks, but rather a member of the cyprinid family. Known for their torpedo-shaped body, and large fins with distinct black margins, they are sometimes called the tricolor shark, silver shark, or shark minnow. Naturally occurring in the rivers of Southeast Asia, they are extremely active and social fish so, in order to thrive, are best kept in a small school of at least 3, with unobstructed, open swimming space in the tank.
Balas need good aeration and ideally a back up system in the event of a power cut. Feed a high quality flake-based diet.
